Joan Emmet is the Licensing and Copyright Librarian at the Yale University Library (YUL). Joan heads up the License Review Team at the library comprised of librarians and technical staff who manage the negotiation and workflow of Yale’s numerous licenses for electronic resources. In addition, Joan reviews a variety of other types of contracts and agreements for the library and serves as copyright adviser within the YUL system. She has worked with Yale researchers to draft author-centric publisher agreements and contributes copyright guidance for the library’s digital publishing platform EliScholar. An active advocate of Open Access (OA), Joan and library colleagues have created a YUL interest group on campus to discuss OA and reasonable actions that can be implemented through the library’s efforts.She previously worked as Associate Director and then Director for the NorthEast Research Libraries Consortium (NERL), managing operations, workflow, and licenses for consortial purchase and subscription of eresources for its then 28 member and 60+ affiliate member libraries. In 2015, Joan was a co-presenter at the popular ACRL-New England Chapter Copyright Bootcamp workshop.Joan received her MLS from Syracuse University and JD from the Quinnipiac University School of Law.
