The Importance of Discovery: How Prioritizing Exploration Promotes the Value of the Library

SESSION VIDEO NOW AVAILABLE

Your library offers students a wealth of ebooks and print books, but are students able to easily find and use these resources?

Often, librarians focus much of their effort on curating the highest quality content, but end up approaching discoverability of this content as an afterthought. The good news: You can balance these two important components of collection development with the right enrichment tools — like those offered through Syndetics Unbound.

During this session, we’ll explore challenges libraries like yours face when it comes to promoting discoverability, offering valuable examples of approaches that work and approaches that could use a little work. Finally, we’ll share insight into ProQuest’s latest innovation that will provide contextual discovery within the platform, saving your researchers time and effort.

Attendees will be able to:

  • Describe the impact of a lack of discoverability on the library and its researchers.
  • Identify how the integration of Syndetics Unbound into Ebook Central will increase exploration and drive discoverability.
  • Recognize changes that could be made to enhance the discoverability of their library’s resources.

Analyzing the impact and reach of your open access publications with Web of Science
SESSION VIDEO NOW AVAILABLE

Through a partnership with Impactstory, Clarivate Analytics has combined the research discovery strength of the Web of Science with the world of Open Access.  Impactstory’s Unpaywall technology is integrated into Web of Science, making it the most authoritative Open Access search engine available. Web of Science users can identify which of their search results are available for free on publishers’ websites (Gold/Gold Hybrid) or trusted repositories (Green Accepted and Green Published). Not only does this make access to free, legal article PDFs simple for researchers and students, but it also enables librarians to do in-depth analysis of Open Access availability across the 32,000 journals on the Web of Science platform.  Currently, this means over 10 million Open Access articles can be found through Web of Science. We will use InCites Benchmarking and Analytics to analyze the citation impact of Open Access content from a university.  We will examine this from the journal, subject area, and funder perspectives, and discuss how libraries can use these data to support Open Access policies and collection development.

De Who? A Lunch Session from De Gruyter

SESSION VIDEO NOW AVAILABLE

It’s okay, really. De Gruyter isn’t a mega publisher, and we’re not really good at tooting our own horn, so we understand that you may not know exactly who we are. We do, however, know something about publishing since we’ve been doing it since 1749. But just because we’ve been around for almost 270 years doesn’t mean we’re stuffy.

In fact, we have fresh and modern attitudes to a number of things such as partnerships with university presses, helping libraries deliver excellent service to their customers, and supporting authors to advance research in Humanities & Social Sciences, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

We also have considerable experience in open access publishing and are even the largest independent source of open access books. So if you are interested in working with a proud publishing house that is big enough to matter, but small enough to listen, come to our ER&L Lunch.

Agenda

❷ De Gruyter Trivia for the chance to win an Amazon gift card
